Conservation Internship – American Museum of Natural History

The position will last for an appointment term of 18 months. The Intern will work under the Project Director, within the Science Conservation department, and as part of the larger project team. They will carry out efforts focused on stabilization, rehousing, cleaning and documentation of elephant crania.
Ideal candidates will possess the capacity for meticulous care in the handling of collections materials, strong written/verbal communication skills and organizational/problem-solving competencies.
Job duties include:
- Work with the project team to complete basic examination, as well as conservation treatment and documentation activities including cleaning, rehousing and archiving of conservation records.
- Support various other project activities, including the research and testing of materials and methods in support of treatment, stabilization and rehousing of specimens, preparation and procurement of materials and tools used in conservation treatment and related administrative tasks.
- Contribute to the development and dissemination of content communicating project findings to collection care audiences outside the Museum via the generation of webpage updates, blog posts, conference presentations, posters, etc.
- Bachelor’s degree in fine arts, the humanities or the sciences.
- One year of related museum work experience.
- Seeking to enter or advance in the field of conservation through graduate study or other professional development.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Familiarity with conservation issues and procedures related to handling, examination, treatment and/or documentation of museum collection items similar to those within the scope of this project.
- Digital photography skills.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing) for prolonged periods.
- Must be able to occasionally lift up to 20 pounds.
- Must be able to move about the Museum campus.
- Positioning/change of positioning: Must be able to frequently position oneself/body to accomplish job duties.
- Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling.
