Summer CAMP (Conservation Art Maintenance Program)

Cambridge Arts Council is seeking 1 or 2 art technicians to join the Cambridge Arts Council’s Summer Conservation Art Maintenance Program from May 19th – July 10 (flexible dates and hours coordinated among the team; anticipated 20-30 hours per week).

About Summer CAMP:

Since the early 2000s, the Art Conservation Program for Cambridge Arts Council has held an annual 8-week summer art maintenance program, where the Collections Care Specialist heads a team of Art Conservation Technicians in washing, treating, and reporting on the City’s public art collection. The City’s collection consists of over 280 sculptures, murals, and artworks integrated into parks, plazas, sidewalks, youth and senior centers, schools, and libraries. Most of these artworks were funded by the city’s Percent-for-Art program, which requires 1% of construction costs on municipal capital investment be designated for use for site-responsive public artwork.

The first 3 weeks of the program are generally devoted to washing & waxing bronze sculptures which need a fresh coat of wax yearly. The next couple of weeks are devoted to washing sculpture in other media including stone, metal, tile, glass, and fiberglass as well as checking the conditions of artworks indoor in city buildings. Prior to the program, the Director of Conservation and the Collections Care Specialist review the current condition of the collection and may choose one or two artworks that require above and beyond regular maintenance treatment to set as the special projects during the last two weeks of the program, where the conservation technicians can gain a deeper understanding of conservation work and hone their skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Comfortability with transporting and handling artwork; lifting, transporting, and setting up equipment weighing up to and over 50lbs, and use of power tools. Willingness to work onsite, outside, in varying weather conditions.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience

·       Experience in arts or arts-related field.

·       Experience handling art for a museum, gallery, or other type of art collection, public art program or comparable.
