Olek, Inc., with it’s predecessors has a legacy spanning over 70 years, is a leader in the conservation, restoration, and preservation of historic public buildings’ Architectural Woodwork, Wood, Steel, and Bronze Windows and Doors, monuments, furniture from Ancient to MCM, and architectural features including AIA Divisions 5, 6, 8, 9, and 12. Our work bridges traditional craftsmanship and modern methodology, and our 20,000 sq. ft. atelier in Orange, NJ is a hub of activity for our skilled team of dozens of artisans, conservators, project managers, and technical experts. We are currently seeking an Architectural Conservator Intern to join our growing team.
Olek has grown steadily over the past two decades and now employs more than two dozen specialists, including expert woodworkers, metalsmiths, artists, finishers, sculptors, stained glass artisans blacksmiths, metal machinists, ornamental plasterers, stone masons, and engineers. The firm has completed highly visible public restoration projects in the Eastern United States. Our portfolio includes the restoration of interiors and exteriors at the United Nations, Grand Central Terminal, Yale Beinecke RarBook e Library, various Ivy League Colleges, State Capitols, Court Houses, three Vanderbilt Mansions including for the National Park Service and Smithsonian, Churches, and Municipal buildings.Prince George Ballroom Hotel
Position Responsibilities:
Review architectural drawings, specifications, and other project documents
Assist in bid preparation, including identifying and coordinating specialty subcontractors
Prepare detailed Shop Drawings using AutoCAD (and other drafting software as needed) for a variety of trade areas
Develop and document Methods and Procedures for conservation and restoration work
Work closely with our craftsmen to produce mockups, material and procedural Submittals, and execute work in the field and shop.
Field surveying of existing dimensions, and coordinating with Shop work
Field coordination with craftsmen
Coordinating hardware details with craftsmen and Architects. Purchasing.
Oversee and coordinate on-site preservation work and quality assurance with craftspeople, clients, Architects, and SHPO
Communicate with clients, architects, and consultants throughout all project phases
Assemble and submit project documentation including warranties, maintenance manuals, submittals, and As-Built drawings
Write technical summaries for publication in preservation journals, company publications, and digital platforms
Utilize spreadsheet, word processing, and drafting software for documentation and project management
Ability to work both on-site and at our atelier in Orange, NJ. Position may require travel to other states in Eastern US, usually for 1 week or less. This opportunity does not permit remote work.

Requirements
Candidate Qualifications:
Studying for Bachelor’s degree in an accredited Architecture, Historic Preservation, Conservation program, at the Junior level, or studying for a Master’s or Doctorate degree.
Relevant experience in architectural conservation or preservation
Proficiency in AutoCAD; familiarity with other CAD software is desired.
Knowledge of historic building fabrication systems and materials; experience with traditional crafts is highly desirable, and may reduce academic experience required.
Technical writing, communication, and documentation skills
Attention to detail and passion for preserving architectural heritage
