Job Description:

As an architectural materials conservator, you will play a vital role in safeguarding our cultural heritage by preserving historic buildings and their materials. Your expertise will contribute to the longevity and integrity of landmark structures across the nation. The architectural materials conservator will perform surveys and assessments for various landmark and historic building materials. Surveys and assessment work often will include material sampling and laboratory analysis. Project locations may be any of the 50 states of the Union. The role may include but is not limited to:

  •        Perform and coordinate field surveys, historic finish investigations, and conditions assessments on a variety of architectural materials.
  •        Examine various building materials that include but not limited to: plaster, paint, wood, stone, and metals.  Document existing conditions in prose, provide recommendations and restoration durations & anticipated costs.
  •        Manage and carry out historic paint investigations and color paint analysis.
  •        Use a variety of techniques to analyze historic paint to determine detailed chromachronologies including: performing various microscopic analysis, FTIR Spectrometry, and GC-MS.
  •        Identification and analysis of coatings and other surface treatments.
  •        Identify and analyze coatings and surface treatments, including paint exposures to reveal the original colors and patterns.
  •        Coordinate and carry out photo-documentation as needed.
  •        Writing plays an important role for this position.  Provide maintenance plans, detailed final treatment reports and documentation, as required.
  •        The work, at times, may be executed with other staff that may require some supervision of guidance.
  •        Work with project teams to prepare technical specifications and architectural details for preservation, restoration, and conservation of historic buildings.

Requirements

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Experience: Five years related work.
  • Education: Certificate or Masters in Conservation or Historic Preservation, or 10 years previous experience in conservation work.
  • Member in good standing with AIC preferred but not required.
  • Read and interpret documents such as conservation documentation, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, safety data sheets (SDS) and procedure manuals.
  • Use Microsoft Office, or similar, to write and prepare routine reports and correspondence. Reports must be detailed with support materials and photography. Any report should be considered worthy of publishing when complete.
  • Be comfortable working in a construction environment and make responsible judgments about workplace safety.
  • Communicate verbally and maintain an effective working relationship with staff and other co-workers by contributing to a positive organizational culture based on mutual respect, collegiality, collaboration, and openness to many perspectives.
  • Experience working on scaffolding, baker scaffold and ladders.
  • Lift up to 50 lbs. and stand for long periods of time.
  • Organized, accurate & detail oriented.
  • Reliable, responsible, and pro-active in performing work.
  • Must be able to work independently on investigations at project sites.
  • Team player who can take constructive feedback.
  • Ability to understand and follow directions.
  • Ability to multitask is critical.
  • Willingness to travel. Some project may require extended period of time at project location.
  • Able to work at height above 20′ and can climb ladders/scaffolding

Compensation: $30-$50 per hour depending on experience
