The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation (CWF) is excited to announce an opportunity for an Assistant Paper Conservator to join our team. CWF is the largest living history museum in the US with over 40 conservation staff across 9 specialty labs. Our collections include decorative arts, American folk art, archaeological media, architectural sites and fragments, rare books, and archives. The Conservation team works with collections in multiple settings, including historic and reconstructed buildings, the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, our well-equipped conservation and analytical laboratories, and extensive storage. In addition, the paper conservation lab works closely with the John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library which includes special collections and the CWF archive.

About the Position:

The paper conservation lab works on a diverse range of paper collections from pastels, watercolors, drawings, maps, and prints to architectural drawings, wallpaper fragments, parchment manuscripts, rare books, and more! In addition, the paper lab works with other conservation labs on objects that contain paper. We have access to excellent digital resources, a well outfitted multimodal imaging suite, portable x-ray fluorescence, FT-IR spectroscopy, polarized light microscopy, SEM, microfade testing, digital x-radiography, and other examination, analytical, and chemical testing equipment.

The Assistant Conservator of Paper is responsible for enhancing the protection and preservation of Colonial Williamsburg’s cultural assets by examining paper objects from the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation’s collection, designing, and proposing treatment protocols, and carrying out conservation treatments. The Assistant Conservator carries out condition assessments and treatments in accordance with research and exhibition objectives.. They are supervised by the Associate Paper Conservator and work closely with curators and other professional colleagues.
