The Philadelphia Museum of Art is welcoming applications for a two-year Andrew W. Mellon Postgraduate Fellowship in Decorative Arts and Sculpture Conservation, beginning September 1, 2025, and ending August 31, 2027. As an integral member of the museum’s conservation staff, the Fellow will examine, conduct research, and perform treatment on a wide variety of artworks in the museum collections and will participate in activities related to exhibitions, installations, loans, preventive care of the permanent collection, and professional and public engagement. The Fellow will collaborate with other museum staff to conduct research and analysis to understand further materials, techniques, conditions, and/or installation of artworks.
Specifically, you will
- Examine, document, conduct research, and perform treatment on sculpture, decorative arts, and installation artworks of a broad range of materials (e.g., stone, metal, ceramic, polychromed wood, plastics, outdoor sculpture, variable/time-based media) in the collections of the American, European, Asian, and Modern and Contemporary Art Departments.
- Carry out an approved research project of publishable quality.
- Participate in ongoing preservation activities to support preventive care for works of art on display and in storage, including conservation planning for exhibition, integrated pest management and outdoor sculpture maintenance.
- Participate as a member of the Conservation Division in a range of institutional initiatives and functions, as well as in professional and public engagement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Your background and experience include:
- Recent graduate/postgraduate degree from a recognized Art Conservation training program, with a specialization in objects conservation.
- Demonstrated visual, manual, and scholarly aptitude.
- Demonstrated proficiency in English language skills (written and spoken)
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
Position and Compensation Details
- The salary for this position is $43,888.
- The position includes an annual stipend for research and travel.
- This position is Full-Time, Exempt, and 35 hours per week.
- This position is part of the AFSCME Local 397 bargaining unit.
