About the Position:
LA Art Labs (LAAL) is expanding its growing team and seeking talented individuals for the following positions:
• Senior Paintings Conservator(Minimum 10 year of post-graduate experience)
• Paintings Conservator (Minimum 5 years of post-graduate experience)
Positions are full-time; part-time roles are considered.
The selected candidate will collaborate closely with the Principal Conservator and other conservators, and receive support from 4-6 conservation technicians, as well as specialized contractors. LAAL provides care for museum, corporate, and private collections, and handles insurance claims. The conservator will work both at the lab and on-site at museums, galleries, and private residences, engaging with curators, scholars, and other art professionals. There will be opportunities to work on a wide range of projects, from local conservation treatments to international collaborations.
Key Responsibilities:
• Independently manage and delegate conservation work.
• Conduct research, examination, and treatment of paintings, with a focus on treatment.
• Examine paintings for acquisitions, deaccessions, and loans for clients and institutions.
• Coordinate sample preparation and communicate with external labs for scientific analysis.
• Maintain regular communication with art professionals in nonprofits, galleries, and institutions.
• Prepare detailed visual and written documentation for treatments and research.
• Domestic and international travel may be required for examination, treatment, and couriering of artworks.
• Supervise contract conservators and student interns.
• Ideally, engage in public and professional dissemination of activities through lectures, publications, and other platforms.
Qualifications:
Experience and Skills:
• Professional experience in museum or private practice (as per experience level required above).
• Proficiency in examining and treating a wide variety of paintings made with diverse materials and techniques.
• Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience with state-of-the-art conservation documentation tools and digital photography.
• Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work on ladders or rigging as needed.
• Must have a valid driver’s license and access to a car.
Education and Knowledge:
• Master’s degree in Conservation from a recognized graduate program.
• Strong preference for candidates with experience in contemporary art conservation practices.
Salary Offering for Assistant and Full Conservator:
We are currently offering the following hourly rates on a contractor basis for a trial period, with the potential for W2 employment upon successful completion of the trial phase:
• Senior Conservator: $60 – $120 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)
• Full Conservator: $40 – $60 per hour (based on experience and qualifications)
The trial phase will allow us to assess fit and performance, with a view to transitioning to full-time W2 employment, where benefits and a competitive salary package will be offered.
