Preventative Bibliography

This bibliography was initially prepared in May 2002 by Bruno Pouliot, with the collaboration and assistance of Linda Lennon, Winterthur Class of 1997, who then served as Assistant Conservator on different projects at Winterthur Museum and for WUDPAC. Responsibility for the bibliography was passed to Dr. Joelle Wickens in 2009. It is constantly updated and your suggestions for new sources are welcome. Resources can be filtered by the following topics: Collections Care, General Reference, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Environmental Management, Housing, Storage, and Display, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Light, Mold, Packing and Transport, Pollutants, Relative Humidity and Temperature, Surveys and Assessments, and Sustainability.

Passive Climate Controlled Repositories. Storage Facilities for Museum, Archive and Library Purposes.

Christoffersen, Lars D. Zephyr.
1995 – Copenhagen: National Museum of Denmark Conservation Department.

This publication is a result of a research project on passive climate control for museums, archives and libraries. The concept of passive climate control has developed through the study of historic buildings where the structure alone is enough to create a positive archival climate. One way of achieving passive climate control in modern buildings is by focusing on building insulating structures that emulate the historic structures and by using the proper materials. The publication covers several complicated mathematic formulas developed to predict the variation in temperature and relative humidity throughout the year. This can be used to determine the effect changes in certain parameters will have on the indoor climate. (provided by Bruno P. Pouliot)

Building Pathology: Deterioration, Diagnostics and Intervention.

Harris, S.Y.
2001 – New York: John Wiley.

This is an excellent textbook on building pathology, which summarizes the long experience of the author, both as a practitioner and as a teacher. It is addressed to the practitioner as a reference, to the non-practitioner as a primer, and to the student as a basic text. (provided by Bruno P. Pouliot)
