This bibliography was initially prepared in May 2002 by Bruno Pouliot, with the collaboration and assistance of Linda Lennon, Winterthur Class of 1997, who then served as Assistant Conservator on different projects at Winterthur Museum and for WUDPAC. Responsibility for the bibliography was passed to Dr. Joelle Wickens in 2009. It is constantly updated and your suggestions for new sources are welcome. Resources can be filtered by the following topics: Collections Care, General Reference, Emergency Preparedness and Response, Environmental Management, Housing, Storage, and Display, Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Light, Mold, Packing and Transport, Pollutants, Relative Humidity and Temperature, Surveys and Assessments, and Sustainability.

This document includes information on general collection environment criteria, assessment, monitoring and goals for an improved conservation environment. It also contains relevant information on building environment and systems, phases of design and construction projects, and finally a useful glossary of terms used in design and construction of building systems.

Temperature and relative humidity effects on the mechanical and chemical stability of collections.
Mecklenburg, M. F., and C. S. Tumosa.
1999 – ASHRAE Journal 41(4): 69-74.
This article focuses on how temperature and relative humidity affect objects with the largest stress on the mechanical change caused by incorrect relative humidity and chemical considerations. It also covers how objects take time to acclimate to the surrounding relative humidity and in lesser detail the effect of temperature and age on the object with respect to the object?s response to temperature and relative humidity. It discusses various materials and their response to temperature and relative humidity and as an overall consideration indicates that larger ranges in both temperature and relative humidity can be acceptable for museum objects. This is a helpful source as it provides a more manageable range than the traditional 70?F/50% guideline that has been held to for so long. (written by Claire Curran)

New environmental guidelines at the Smithsonian Institution.

2004 – Papyrus 5(3): 16-17.
This source identifies new environmental guidelines followed by the Smithsonian for the preservation of objects. The new range is 45% +/-8% and 70?F +/-4?F. It is intended to allow for changing environment over the annual cycle. This source is useful for having a less stringent guideline to reference that is considered acceptable for the preservation of objects. (written by Claire Curran)
